Hilda Johanna Malan was born 13 September 1869 in Wellington, Cape Colony, South Africa. Her parents were Christian Coenraad Malan (1842-1928) and Geertruida Johanna Steytler (1842-1903). Her earliest known ancestor is Jacques Malan, who arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1688. He was born in 1672 at Merindol near Avignon, Provence, France.
