Clair Robb Mathis was born 24 September 1905 in Price, Utah. His parents were James Samuel Mathis and Mary Ann Robb. He married Phyllis 1 June 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had two children. Phyllis died in 1951. He married Christal Young 13 August 1954. They had one daughter.

John Mathis (Mathews) emigrated from Wales to Oyster Bay, Long Island ca 1700. John was born in Merthyr Tydfil. In 1714, he settled in Oak Island. John married Alice (Andrews) Higbee, widow of John Higbee in 1716. Alice's parents were Mordecai and Mary Andrews. John died on 23 October 1779. There were seven children born from this union.

Arthur Johnson (1757-1839), son of George Johnson, served in the Revolutionary War, married Lucy Harmon in 1779, and lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana and White County, Illinois. Descendants lived in Indiana, Illinois, New York, California and elsewhere.
