The diary and Civil War Letters of Samuel Hurley Mattox (1833-1864) from August, 1862 - May 1864. Samuel was the youngest brother of the author's greatgrandfather, John Pinkston Mattox. He volunteered in the service of the U.S. in Co. C, 85th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He died in 1864 while in the service, leaving behind his wife Ann and two daughters. Ann married Joseph H. Holmes in 1867 in Riley, Indiana.

George Washington O'Brien was born in Brown County, Ohio ca. 1823. He married three times. By 1850 he was living in Clay County, Indiana he moved to Missouri by 1857 and to Arkansas by 1884. He had six children by Nancy D. Tribble and one child by Rebecca Henderson. George died 1912 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Descendants lived primarily in Indiana, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere.

Ambrose Clark (d.1826) moved from Berkeley County, Virginia to Morgan County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Descendants lived in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Texas and elsewhere.

Gladys Anna Barnes, daughter of Adolphus Frederick Barnes and Mahala Ann Chesebro, was born in 1905 in Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. She married Herbert Ellis Carpenter (1902-1970) in 1923. They had five children. She died in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Pearl Elizabeth Vetter was born 28 October 1909 in Cartharpin, Virginia. Her parents were Charles W. Vetter and Barbara Nalls. She married Donation Libeau, Jr., son of Donation Libeau, Sr. (1861-1940). The family lived mainly in Virginia.

Valentine Mattox (b.ca.1760) served in the War of 1812, and moved from Virginia to land near Hardinsburg, Indiana, and married Mary (Polly) Shrewsbury as his second wife. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana and elsewhere.

George Aldridge(1806-1876) was born in Clark County, Kentucky and married Purloina Baker in 1829. They later moved to Indiana and then Iowa. Ancestry also traced to Samuel D.
