Maudie Gladys McCain (1911- ) was born in Counce, Tennessee to William Joseph and Georgia Ann Kennedy McCain. She was the second of six children and was a descendant of early Mississippi farmers. Samuel Kirkpatrick (1779-1849) was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, the son of Benjamin Kirkpatrick, a Revolutionary War soldier. He and his wife, Barbara (1780-1856), had thirteen children, 1803-1822. The family migrated from to Ohio in 1809 and settled on land in Wayne Township, Butler County. He is buried at Collinsville, Ohio. Descendants listed lived in Ohio, Indiana, and elsewhere.

Willie Elwyn Cheever McCain was born 6 November 1864 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1883. He married Ambrosia Gregory in 1889 in Deadwood, South Dakota.
