Sarah Prudence Smith (1845-1932) was born at Greenway, Knox County, Tennessee, the daughter of Philip Smith (1789-1882) and Jennette McKinley Smith (1803-1887). The book covers the descendants of two separate Buchanan and two separate Gillespie families in southwest Virginia. James Buchanan was born ca. 1702 in northern Ireland to Alexander Buchanan. William Temple was born 6 June 1662 in Hutton Bushell, Yorkshire, England. His parents were William Temple and Elizabeth Woad. He married Rebecca Tatum, daughter of Samuel Tatum and Mary Elizabeth Moore, in about 1685 and lived in Charles City County, Virginia. They had nine children.
