Peter Gortner came to America in 1734 from Europe. His homeland and parents are not known. He stayed in Pennsylvania before settling in Virginia. He married Mary and they had at least 4 children. Information on many of his descendants is included in this volume along with other early Gortner individual who settled in colonial America. Descendents now live throughout the United States.

Adam McCool was born ca. 1735. He was living in Anson County, North Carolina, in 1759 in an area that is now in South Carolina. He and his wife, Jane, had seven children. He died in 1801. Descendants listed lived in South Carolina, Indiana, and elsewhere.

Joseph A. Carter (1826-1853), son of William Carter (1792-1831) and the grandson of William Carter (ca. 1757-1839), a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Augustas Oliver (1818-1887) was born in Georgia. In 1840 he married Elizabeth Emaline Hamrick and they were the parents of ten children. In about 1855 the family moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
