David McCreary was born in 1804 in the town of Gettysburg in south central Pennsylvania. In 1828, he married Ann Rebecca Flore. This book is a story of David and their 8 children after Ann Rebecca's death. Although most of the dialogue is fictional, the story is basically true.

William McCreary came from Chester County, Pennsylvania to Adams County, ca. 1774. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, Iowa, and elsewhere. Porter family is traced to John Porter who came from England to Massachusetts in 1627 and later settled in Connecticut.

Robert McCreary (ca. 1742-1814) was born in County Down, Ireland, probably in the Groomsport area, the son of John and Agnes Kennedy McCreary. He married Margaret Gaston (1739-1768) in Ireland, ca. 1760 and immigrated to America, with her family, soon after their marriage. They had three children, 1761-1765, born in Chester County, South Carolina. He married 2) Mary Fortune, shortly after Margaret's death. They had seven children, 1771-after 1791....

Jakob Hepper, born ca. 1836, probably in Grossliebental, South Russia married Karolina Karolina Kundert. Jakob died in 1904 and Karolina and some descendants came to the U.S. in 1909 and settled in South Dakota. Descendants lived in Russia, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, and elsewhere.

Alfred Tate McCreay was born 14 August 1887 in St. Joseph, Missouri. His parents were Alfred Tate McCreay (1854-1926) and Rosanna Blackburn (1857-1938). He married Marian Christine Abel (1890-1980), daughter of William Henry Abel and Lucinda Christine Pond (1863-1951), 15 June 1912 in Kansas City, Missouri. They had four children. They lived in Boise, Idaho, Chicago, Illinois and California.

Sovereign Evans Holley (1856-1917) was born in Aiken County, South Carolina, the son of Milledge Travis and Sarah Evans Holley; and the grandson of Wise and Elizabeth Holley. He married Julia Etta Woodward (1856-1815), daughter of Hansford and Emily Toole Woodward, in 1879 in Aiken County. They had eleven children, 1880-1901.
