Lauchlin McLean was born in 1780 in Scotland. He married Flora Lamon in 1805 in North Carolina. They had eight children. He died 4 August 1858 in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina and South Carolina.

In 1666, three sons of Sir John Hinton/Hynton (1603-1682) immigrated from England to Maryland. In 1710, three Hinton brothers immigrated from England to Chowan Co., N. C.
