William McFarland was born and raised near Edinburg, Scotland. He immigrated to America and family's home in Virginia was probably in what is now Berkeley Co., West Virginia. All his children were born in that county between 1779 and 1790. He married Nancy Kilgore in 1777. She died in Ohio ca. 1841. Descendants live in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Kansas and elsewhere.

He was the son of Aquilla Dorsey and a descendant of Edward Dorsey who immigrated to America from Hockley, England ca. 1650. Charles married Elizabeth Anchors ca. 1783. The McFarland family of Ohio. Samuel McFarland (1832-1907) married Mary Ann Fleming (1832-1917) in 1852. Couple lived on Samuel's father's farm on Mansfield Lucas Rd. in the N.E. corner of Washington Township, where eight of their nine children were born. No other place names than Washington Township mentioned in the book. Samuel was the son of George and Mary McFarland, Mary Ann was the daughter of John and Margery Fleming.
