Annis Bales was born in Missouri in 1906. She was the fourth of five children, one of whom (a older brother) died as an infant. Her family later moved to Kansas and her father spent the last part of his life homesteading in Colorado. She and her sister never married and her brothers only had three children. Thomas McGee (1760-1822) was born in Ireland and immigrated to America in 1771 at age eleven. He and his family settled in the Mecklenburg area of western North Carolina. He later served in the American Revolution. Thomas married Amey Williams (1771-1843) and they were the parents of at least nine children.

John Dickinson McGee, son of John McGee (1816-1902) and Mary Ann Gallop, was born in 1855 in Dundas, Ontario. He married Eva Angeline McDonald, daughter of George A. McDonald and Mary Angleine Soudy, in 1876 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. They had six children. He died in 1946 in Seattle, Washington.

He married Cora Emma Crosby, daughter of Jonathan Crosby and Sarah Smart, at Brockway Twp, Stearns Co, Minnesota, on 15 Jul 1870. Benjamin died on 28 May 1923 at Klamath Falls, Oregon, at age 72.
