Jane Gilliland (1822-1865) was born a Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Gilliland. Her family soon moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana, where she spent most of her girlhood, and then migrated to Iowa. She married William McGrew in 1844 at Wapello, Iowa. They moved to Lancaster Township, Keokuk County, Iowa. She died at age 42, three years after the birth of her youngest child.

The McGrews arrived in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland from Scotland ca. 1610-1625. Robert McGrew emigrated to America with his wife, Isabella ca. 1725-6. A genealogy of the Fulkerson (Volkertson) family who are descendants of Dirck Holgerson who emigrated from Norway to Holland, and from there to New Amsterdam in New York, where he married Christine Vigne about 1630/1631. He died after 1677. Descendants lived throughout the United States.

Family history and genealogical information about the descendants of Robert McGrew who was born ca. 1675 in Scotland or Ireland. He married Isabella (surname unknown) sometime prior to the year 1705. They immigrated to America ca. 1726 and settled in Tyrone, Adams Co., Pennsylvania. Robert and Isabella were the parents of five children. Alexander McGrew (1768-1828) was a son of James McGrew (d.1773) and Jane Lapsley. Alexander emigrated from Tyrone, Ireland to Charlestown, South Carolina in 1773, with his father and their family. His parents died shortly, and Alexander was raised as an orphan in St. Matthews Parish, Orangeburg District, South Carolina.
