"In an old wooden trunk in my grandmothers attic, I discovered about 100 letters written mostly in the 1840s through the 1880s. Half of them were written by Thomas McNair and his son Robert Hanes McNair who went from their home in Butler County, Pennsylvania to California in the famous gold rush of 1849. Robert Carpenter (1722-1777) was born in Rhode Island. A son, Robert Carpenter (1775-1838), was born in Palmer, Massachusetts. He married Phebe McNair in 1798 and they had thirteen children. The eldest child was Abner Carpenter (1799-1851) who was born in Augusta, New York. He married Rebecca McNair and they moved to northern Indiana ca. 1840. Rebecca died ca. 1846 and Abner married Elizabeth Miller in 1847.

The London, England branch of Camps landed in Jamestown, Virginia in 1632. They were the descendants of Thomas Camp who died in North Carolina. By his first wife, he had a daughter and eleven sons; by his second wife, he had eleven sons and then a daughter. Descendants lived in Connecticut, Ohio, Missouri, Utah and elsewhere.

John McNair Jr. (1690-1762) was the son of a Scottish immigrant to Ireland, and married Christiana Walker. In 1738, the family immigrated from Ireland to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, bringing John's widowed mother also. They later moved to Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Indianam, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska and elsewhere.
