"In 1853 settlers came to McNeil Island in the Puget Sound in Washington State. They farmed the land and set up a town. In 1875 a farmer sold his land to the Federal Government for a Territorial Prison in 1891 Washington Territory became Washington State and the Territorial Prison became a US Penitentiary. Mary Ann Smith was born 2 July 1853 in Newton Heath, Lancashire, England. Her parents were William Smith and Mary Hibbert. Her family emigrated in 1856 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Utah in 1862. She married John Corlett McNeil 12 September 1868. They had twelve children. She died in 1944 in Showlow, Arizona.

William Ezra Goodman was born in Michigan in 1871. His father took the family to Arizona about 1890 where he married Hannah McNeil. They had ten children and William eventually joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hannah had been a lifetime member. Information on their descendants, ancestry, and their related families is given in this volume. Descendants live throughout the western states and most remain active in the Church.
