George McNeill Rose and Augusta Jane Steel (1848-1941) were married in 1869 at Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was a descendant of William Kirkland who immigrated from Scotland prior to 1790 and settled in North Carolina. Her immigrant ancestor was Thomas Blake who settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1664.

Kryn Jansen Van Meteren (1650-1720) and his father, Jan Gysbertsen Van Meteren, immigrated from Holland, The Netherlands to New Utrecht, Long Island, New York in 1662; he married Neltje (Nellie) Van Cleef in 1683. Descendants (chiefly spelling the surname Van Matre, with some spellings of Van Meter, Van Metre, etc.) lived in New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois and elsewhere.
