Johann Schenck was born in Switzerland in 1845. Katharina Ziegler was his second wife and the mother of eight of his nine children. Katharina had a child from her second marriage to Paul Andries. After Johann's death in 1884 the family moved from Michigan to Montana where many of their descendants still reside. Thomas Meagher (1823-1867) was the leader of Young Ireland and of the abortive insurrection of 1848, for which he was sentenced to be hanged but instead was deported to Tasmania. He escaped to America in 1852 after which he organized the Irish Brigade during the American Civil War.
