Robert Means (1742-1823) was born at Stewardstown, Ireland, and died at Amherst, New Hampshire. He emigrated with his cousin, James McGregor (d. 1810), and settled at Merrimack, N. H. He married Mary McGregor (1752-1838), a daughter of Rev. David McGregor of Ireland. She died at Ashland, N. H. Descendants live in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and elsewhere.

The author uses the 'common place book' of his grandfather to identify the lineage of the South Carolina family of Means. He shows the direct lineage back to John Means (d.1739), of Scottish lineage, who immigrated (as a widower with three known children) from Ireland to Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1718.

Thomas Means (1767-1828), son of John and Isabella Harper Means of Boston, Massachusetts, migrated to South Carolina a few years after the Revolution. He married Sarah Milling (1773-1816) in 1789. They had fourteen children, 1789-1815. Record follows male lines only to the fourth generation. Descendants listed lived in South Carolina and elsewhere.

William Edmundson was born ca. 1682 in Dublin, Cork Co., Ireland. He was a descendant of Thomas Edmundson who was born ca. 1540 in Little Musgrove, Westmoreland Co., England. William married Elizabeth (surname unknown) sometime prior to the year 1709. They immigrated to America in 1715 and settled in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. They were the parents of seven children. Descendants lived primarily in Pennsylvania.

Abraham Fulton was born at Articlave, Londondery, Ireland, ca. 1712. He married Margaret Guthry, ca. 1745. They had seven children. The family immigrated to America in 1772, landing at Baltimore and settling in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He died between 1787 and 1790. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and elsewhere.
