Thomas Mendenhall, a Quaker, and his wife, Joan, probably lived in or near Marriage Hill, Wiltshire, England. The had nine children, several of whom immigrated to America. Thomas died in 1682 and is buried at Marriage Hill. His sons, John Mendenhall (1659-1758) and Benjamin Mendenhall (1662-1740) settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Joshua Bennett was born 23 March 1788 in Charlestown, Virginia. His parents were James Bennett and Jane McCormick (1784-1821). He married Jane Mendenhall, daughter of Samuel Mendenhall and Hannah Griswold, in 1811. They had six children. He married Amelia Channell, widow of Joseph Channell, 30 January 1823 in Licking County, Ohio. They had six children.
