The Morton appears to have been in Yorkshire for centuries. The earliest tracable ancestor was Edmund Morton (d. 1586) of the estate of Salendine Nook located close to Lindley and west of Huddersfield. Descendants immigrated to Canada.

Thomas Watkins of Chickahomony, Virginia, was the son of Thomas Watkins of Swift Creek. He married a Miss Anderson and had eight children. He died in 1783. Nicholas Friend (d.1737/1738), also known as Neals Larsen and the son of Lawrence (Laers) Friend, married and lived in Uplands, Albany County, New York. Apparently he is cited, at times, as both the first and second husband of his wife Anne. Esther Morton Smith (1865-1942) was the third of six children born to Benjamin Rapier Smith (1825-1904) and Esther Fisher Wharton (1836-1915). Esther's grandparents were Daniel B. Smith and Esther Morton, and William Wharton and Deborah Fisher. Their families were devout Quakers. Esther lived many years with her sister married Anna Wharton Smith Wood and her family. She lived primarily in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and in Newport, Rhode Island....

Thomas Stanford (d.1695) died at Charlestown, Massachusetts. He married Sarah (Crouch) Jones, widow of Thomas Jones. She was the daughter of William Crouch and Sarah Lamson of Charlestown. They were the parents of six children, plus five from her first marriage.
