Charles Stuart Martin was born in Utah in 1881. His parents were John Martin and Margaret Hay Martin. He attended the Utah School for the Deaf where he met Clara Viola Eddy, a deaf teacher from Kansas, who was the daughter of Nathaniel Huggins Eddy and Margaret Nixon Eddy. In 1852, Robert Nixon (1827-1897) and his first wife, Laura Wood (1832- 1872), left Asheboro, N. C., headed for Guadalupe County, Texas. They reared eight children before she died. He married Frances/ Fannie Amanda Andrews (1843-1939) and she gave him seven more children. In 1895, they removed to Luling, Texas where they both died.

John Duggan Gibbs, son of Francis Gibbs and Martha Duggan, was born in 1815 in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. He married Julia Ann Tompkins in 1841 in Bristol, England. They emigrated in 1863 and settled in Willard, Utah. He died in 1892 in Portage, Utah.
