Wythenshawe is a new town, designed in the 1920's by Barry Parker, for Manchester, to house 100,000 people in 10 neighborhoods. It encompasses the parish and township of Northenden (Northen), the township and chapelry of Baguley and the township of Northen Etchells. It was named for Wythenshawe Hall, the seat of the Tatton family.

Thomas Carter Sr. (ca.1680-1738) immigrated from England to Henrico (later Goochland) County, Virginia during or before 1713, and married three times. Josiah Carter (1745-1822) was a direct descendant in the third generation. He married Mary Anthony in Bedford County, Virginia and moved to Putnam County, Georgia. The Kelsick surname originates in Cumberland, England. Members of the family immigrated to Virginia and Antigua during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The name Dobyns (D'Aubyn) derives from a Norman follower of William the Conqueror who settled in Gloucestershire. The family spread to other areas of England, then to Virginia. John Sutton (d. 1692), also of England, settled in Middlesex County, Virginia, before 1666.
