James Patton was born 13 February 1756 in Tamlecht, County Londonderry, Ireland. He immigrated to America and landed in Philadelphia 3 August 1783. James married one of the daughters of Francis Reynolds. They moved to Asheville, North Carolina and reared a family of eleven children. Descendants lived in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Kansas, Tennessee and elsewhere.

The life of Jane Cade Patton (1824-1921), who was born in what is now Fountain County, Illinois, the daughter of William Cade of Delaware. Jane and her parents came to Illinois in 1854 and settled in a area that was to become a part of Button Township in Ford County.
