The earliest known ancestor of our branch of the family was John Petty who according to family tradition was born in Virginia, twice married and who moved to Chatham County, North Carolina.

Ewell Petty, son of Micajah Petty and Elizabeth, was born in 1803. He married Elizabeth Pearson Petty in 1825. They had two children. He married Elizabeth Curry in 1831. They had six children. Samuel Petty Leather (1821-1889) was born in Sheffield to John and Mary Ann Petty Leather. The Leather family had been farmers on the Lancashire/Cheshire border for generations while the Pettys had lived in Ilkley since 1493. Samuel became an engineer and worked first in the waterworks in Manchester and later was manager of the gas works in Burnley. In 1846 he married Jane Ann Turner who died without issue in 1852.
