Martin Phifer Sr. (1720-1791) immigrated in 1737/1738 from Switzerland to Philadelphia, and settled in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, where he married Margaret Blackwelder in 1745. Descendants and relatives lived in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and elsewhere.

Thomas Maydew (1839-1901) was born in Wincle, England. He emigrated from Liverpool, England in 1867. He married Anna E. Halterman Gates, a widow, in Gardner, Illinois, in 1872. She was born in Franklin, Ohio. She died in 1882. Thomas then married (2) Anna's sister, Lucinda, in 1889 in Smith Co., Kansas. Thomas Maydew farmed in Illinois until 1878 after which he moved to Smith Co., Kansas.
Includes Lockhart, Phifer and allied families.
