Five Ambrose brothers (John Grey, Joshua, Thomas, Ambrose, Anthony) emigrated from England to Virginia between 1611 and 1635 and settled in various counties. Descendants lived in Virginia, New England, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and elsewhere.

Description
The earliest known American ancestor of the Proctor family was Robert Proctor who settled in Concord, Massachusetts in 1643. In 1645 he married Jane Hildreth and they were the parents of twelve children. Descendants live throughout the United States.

Robert Proctor married Elizabeth (Betty) Blades in 1766 at Altham, Lancashire. They had a daughter born in 1769. Betty Proctor died in 1782. He married 2) Ellin Houghton (1744-1785), daughter of Henry Houghton of Black Moss, Lancashire, at Newchurch in Pendle, Lancashire, in 1782. They had a son born in 1784.
