The earliest known Rathbone was William Rathbone (1669-1739) who was from Gawsworth, Cheshire. He married Martha Vigour and they were the parents of six children, one of whom was William Rathbone who married Sarah Hyde. Descendants live in England.

Description
Descendants of (Deacon) Daniel Rathbun (1731-1823), who married Sarah Higbee (1739-1835) 1758. He was in the clothing business in Stoningham, Connecticut, where he lived with his wife and their thirteen children. Both are buried in Milton, N.Y., where many of their children lived. Descendants live in Ohio, California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York and elsewhere. Contains mostly family photographs.

Henry Wood Gardner (1821- 1888), direct descendant in the sixth generation, married Mary Brown in 1846, and moved from Killingly, Connecticut to Providence, Rhode Island. Chiefly a record of some of the descendants of Benjamin Harrington. He was probably born in England. He came to America with his parents and a brother ca. 1630. He married Elizabeth White at Providence, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of William White and Elizabeth. He died in 1687. She died in 1701. She married in 1688 to Richard Pray. Benjamin and Elizabeth were the parents of nine children.

William Rathbone (d.1739) married Martha Vigour, became a Quaker in 1730, and lived in Gawsworth, England. Their son, William Rathbone (b.1696), also a Quaker, moved to Liverpool, and became a ship builder, then a ship owner, and a dedicated abolitionist. Descendants and relatives lived at Liverpool and elsewhere in England. Some descendants immigrated to Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and elsewhere.

Bertha Belle Knapp was born February 24, 1873 in Saybrook, McLean, Illinois. Her parents were Charles William Knapp (1834-1902) and Mary Peabody. She married Ambrose Bodien Wallis July 6, 1895 in Rocky Ford, Otero, Colorado. They had five children. She died in 1942 in La Junta, Colorado. Traces her ancestry in New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and elsewhere.

The Rathbun family came to Rhode Island from England sometime about 1650. Later generations moved to Iowa, Illinois, and South Dakota, where in 1924 Vera Viola Rathbun married a Polish immigrant, Michael Babish. Their descendants can now be found in Nevada, Alaska, and elsewhere.
