In 1640, the Good Ship Hopewell arrived in America carrying Edward, Michael and William Ricketts to Virginia. James, Miles and Thomas Ricketts came to Maryland in the 1600's. Includes biographical notes and sketches of Ricketts families throughout the United States.

Edward and Reason Ricketts were sons of Cheney Ricketts. They were both land holders in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Many descendants of their families still live in Ohio, though there are members throughout the United States. Includes Fruth, Shaferly, Ewing, and related families.

William Ricketts was born in Twyford, Hampshire, England and immigrated to New Jersey and later to Baltimore, Maryland about 1637. He married Mary Walton of New York, and died about 1700.

James H. Ricketts was born in Pennsylvania in 1800. He married Jane Harris and they had 10 children. He moved to North Carolina and later the family moved to Tennessee and Arkansas. Information on many of his descendants is given in this volume. Descendants now live in Arkansas, Kansas, California, Utah, Oklahoma, and elswhere. Ancestors and descendants of Samuel Trail (1808-1877) who moved from Virginia or Pennsylvania to Washington County, Maryland, married Evalina Brown in 1832, and settled at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (later West Virginia). Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, West Virginia, Nebraska, Minnesota and elsewhere. Ancestors lived in Maryland, New England and elsewhere. Some ancestors lived in Ireland, England and elsewhere.

Thomas Hamilton (1799-1887) was the son of Thomas Hamilton of Ireland. He had three brothers, James, Hugh and Archibald Hamilton. The family emigrated in 1795 and settled in Venango Co., Pennsylvania in 1801 or 1802. John Rickards (ca. 1640-ca. 1693) or "Ricketts" was an indentured servant who landed in Virginia from England in 1662. His ancestry is in doubt as to where in England he came from and who his father was. The author exhibits evidence of his ancestral lines and possibilities of origin in England.

John Cunningham, son of Revolutionary War soldier Barney Cunningham, lived in Wilson County, Tennessee and died before 1831. Descendants lived in Tennessee, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, Florida and elsewhere.
