John Ridgway was born in England in 1786, the son of Caliph Ridgway. He immigrated to the United States, settled first in Virginia, and then migrated to Kentucky. He married Margaret Crum in 1807, near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. They had eleven children, 1808-1824, born in Breckenbridge, Hardin, and Ohio Counties, Kentucky. He died in 1827 in Harrison County, Indiana. Descendants listed lived in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, and elsewhere....

John Jacob Roach received a King's grant of land in Craven County, South Carolina in 1767, and served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He married Deborah Howard in 1785. Autobiography of Mary R. (Ridgeway) Rea, daughter of Andrew Ridgeway, a sea captain on a merchant vessel trading between Liverpool and Philadelphia. In 1852 she married James A. Rea in Philadelphia, and settled in Fairfield, Iowa. In 1862, they made a "sinuous trek" over the old Oregon trail in a covered wagon, and the description of this trek occupies most of the autobiography.
