Joanna Furnace was funded and founded by cousins Thomas May, Thomas Rutter, Thomas Bull, and Samuel Potts. Samuel Potts (1736-1793) married Joanna Holland (1735-1818) in 1758. The furnace was named after her. Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Bull (1744-1837), married John Smith in 1790.
