Lawrence Shook, probably of "Pennsylvania Dutch" ancestry, was a member of the Maryland militiea in 1757/8. He and his wife had at least five children, 1763-1777. The family migrated to Hampshire County, Virginia, in 1773 and were living in Hardy County, Virginia, by 1786. He migrated to Illinois with his sons ca. 1801. He died between 1817 and 1822. Alfred Montgomery Shook was born July 16, 1845, son of James Keith Shook and Eliza Herndon Green. He grew up near Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. On August 17, 1871 Teresa Estill and Alfred were married at Nashville. She was the daughter of Dr. Wallace Estill and Eleanor Crabb. Lemuel Shook was born in Texas in 1875. His family were early Texas settlers. He married Sarah Sibbie Graham in 1897 and they had two sons. Information on his descendants who still live in Texas as well as background on many of his ancestral lines which came out of the colonial south is given in this volume.
