The Short family is of Scotch-Irish descent, supposedly coming from southwest Scotland. The Shorts lived in Virginia for nearly 200 years (1639-1829). They first settled in the Rappahannock River valley and then in the Shenandoah River valley. In 1834 the first Short family moved to central Illinois. Andrew Byers, son of Samuel Byers and Jane White, married Catherine Lawson, born ca. 1763 in Virginia. They were probably married in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, ca. 1793-1794.
