James Calvin Sly was born in 1807 in Sodus, Wayne Co., New York, and the family soon moved to Canada. He married Margriet J. Fuller in 1831 in Upper Canada. He became a Mormon convert in 1844 in Lewiston, Niagara Co., New York and was a member of the Mormon Battalion. He died in 1864 at Chicken Creek Juab Co., Utah.

He and his wife, Sarah Albright (1784?-1828), had seventeen children, before 1800-1825, born in Bedford, Lancaster, and perhaps other counties in Pennsylvania, and Coumbiana County, Ohio. Andrew Clendening (1798-1874) and his wife, Jane Knox (1808-1888) were married in 1827 in Ireland and immigrated to New Brunswick in 1836. Elias Lomas was born in Goderich, Huron County, Ontario in 1854, the son of James Arthur and Martha Emma (Johnston) Lomas. Anna Chapman (1861-1921) was born in Westfield, New York, the daughter of Andrew and Mary Ann (O'Sullivan) Chapman. Elias and Anna married in 1882. They had twelve children.
