Hans Stumpff was born in Germany about 1600. His great grandson, Michael Stumpff I immigrated to the United States in the middle 1700's and settled in Virginia. Michael Stump III was born in Virginia but by 1819 was in Hardy County, West Virginia. Many of the family stayed in the South but others moved out across the United States.

Frederick Stump was born 1723 in New York or Pennsylvania. He was the son of Christopher Stump and Margaretha (surname unknown). Frederick married Anna Snavely ca. 1756 in Pennsylvania. They moved to Georgia by the year 1769 and were the parents of at least six known children. Anna died in 1804 and Frederick died 20 May 1820. Descendants lived primarily in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Mississippi and elsewhere.
