Reid Herman Johnson was born in 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents were John Herman Johnson (1902-1965) and Sarah Melva Ashton (1898-1974). He married Donna Wood, daughter of Alan Gentry Wood (1900-1944) and Laura Viletta Cowley (1899-1980). They had four children. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Utah, Sweden England and Wales.

John Mallett immigrated to South Carolina from Rochelle, France in 1687. Daniel Mallett, a descendant,(1790-1845) married Clarissa Jones, daughter of John Jones of Milford, Connecticut, in 1813.
