Robert Simison Briggs and Ralph Tallmadge Briggs were the descendants of John Briggs (1609-1690), who immigrated to Rhode Island from London. Their parents were Fayette E. and Elizabeth Candace Simison Briggs. George Clarence and Charlotte Evaline Wattles Briggs were their grandparents. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in England, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.

Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (d.1646) lived at the manor of Rensselaer near Nykerk in the province of Holland, The Netherlands, and was the founder and patroon of the colony of Rensselaerswyck in America. He possibly visited the colony in 1637, but never lived there. His grandson, Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (d.1687), married his cousin, Anna Van Rensselaer, and immigrated to Watervliet, New York.
