Charles Thorp, born at Stadhampton, England, March 30, 1838 to Reverend John Thorp and Elizabeth Ormandy. He came from England to Canada as a young Episcopal minister, then he came over to the United States. In 1865 Charles married Mary Bagnall presumably in Quebec, Canada. Description
The Thorp family appears to have originated in northern England in the Hipperholme and Northowram area. Thorp comes from the Viking word, Torp, which means a small hamlet. William Ralph Thorp (1921- ) was born in Leeds and still resides there. Descendants surnamed Thorp live throughout England and in other parts of the world.

William Thorpe (b. ca. 1605 - d. 1684) was born in England, died in New Haven, Connecticut. He emigrated from England in 1635 to Island of Providence on the "Expectation" at the age of thirty. He was one of the founders of New Haven. He married (1) Elizabeth (d. 1660), born in England, (2) Margaret Pigg, widow of Robert Pigg.

Samuel Legg and his wife, Hannah (b. 1785), had six children, 1806-1830, born in England. The family immigrated to Canada and settled in Elgin County, Ontario. Descendants listed lived in Ontario, Michigan and elsewhere.

James Burnside (ca. 1770-1883) was born and died in Butler County, Pennsylvania. He married Rebecca Lawhead, daughter of Joseph Laughhead, ca. 1793. They had four children, Jane, Martha, Mary and Joseph (1804-1875) in Butler County and migrated to Hubbard, Ohio where they had four more children, John (b. 1807), Hannah, Nancy and Margaret. Descendants include Buckman, Creger, Kuenzli, Monaghan, Thorp and related lines.

Constant Leonard (1754-ca.1788) was born in Orange County, New York. He married Elizabeth Hamilton in about 1774 in Sussex County, New Jersey. They had six children. He died in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa and Montana.
