John Newton Roberson was born in DeKalb County, Georgia, son of Wiles Goram Robinson and Elizabeth Thurman, originally of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. The family changed their surname to "Roberson" between 1845-1850. John married Martha Ann Davenport in 1864, daughter of James Davenport and Rachel Hammock. They joined the L.D.S. Church in 1878 and later moved to Colorado and then, Moab, Utah in 1883.

Thomas Thurman was born about 1715 in Nottinghamshire, England. He married Ann Dean who was born 29 December 1719 and was baptized at St. Giles, West Brigford, Notinghamshire, England. She was the daughter of John Dean and Ellen Hudson. Ann died in 1787 and is buried in St. Peters churchyard on October 27. John was buried 2 January 1795. They had 8 children. They lived all their life in Nottinghamshire, England.
