Adam Hays was born January 12, 1807 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Messenger May 26, 1828 and settled in Knox County, Ohio. They had fourteen children. The family also lived in LaSalle County, Illinois, Marshall County, Iowa, Central City, Colorado and Marion County, Iowa. Mary died in 1870 and Adam married Mary Young November 12, 1872. She married Thomas Jefferson Jones in Linn County, Iowa, 15 February 1846 and died near Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin, 1 June 1893.
