Leota Mae Vance was born in Utah in 1929. Her great grandparents were among the early Latter-day Saint pioneers who came to Utah. She married Dean Fillmore and was the mother of at least one son. Her information on her ancestral lines makes up this collection of materials. Most of her ancestor were long time residents of the United States but at least one line comes from England about 1850.

Members of the Vail family have been in America since the seventeeth century. One of the earliest Vails to reside in America was Thomas Vail of Salem. One of his descendants was Nathan Vail (1777-1857) who was the father of eight children. A number of his descendants eventually settled in Arizona, California and Nevada.

Joseph Vail settled in Pennsylvania after the Revolutionary War. His sons, John and Soloman, lived in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Ohio. Ephriam (1798-1872), son of John, married Elizabeth Pettit in 1821 and lived in Crawford County, Ohio. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and elsewhere. Joseph possibly lived earlier in Virginia or in New Jersey.
