James Pearl was born 17 April 1807 in Ohio and married Elizabeth Berry 25 December 1827. Elizabeth died in 1845 after the birth of their eighth child. In 1847, James married Elizabeth Wiseman and became the father of twelve additional children. James died 1 December 1897 in Oregon. Descendants lived primarily in Oregon, Missouri, Washington and elsewhere.

The Van Winkle ancestor, Jacob Walichs was one of the early settlers of New Amsterdam sometime before 1630. He married Tryntje Jacobs about 1642 and in 1654, moved to Pavonia, New Jersey. He died in 1657.
