Nathaniel Medlin, Sr. was born ca. 1806 in Moore County, North Carolina and died ca. 1869 in Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina. His parents were Hugh Medlin and Fereby. He and his wife Eva Ann "Annie" had five children, all born in Davidson County. Descendants live mainly in North Carolina.

Martin Varner (1787-1844) was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, son of Phillip Varner and Barbara Hottel Varner. He came to Cooper County, Missouri and later settled in Jonesborough, Texas where he married Elizabeth English. Descendants lived in Texas and elsewhere.

The families in these two volumes are not related. Each volume also contains unrelated Varners. Vol. 1 however is primarily about two brothers, Adam and John, who moved into South Carolina from Maryland before the Revolutionary War. The families later moved into Georgia and Alabama. Vol. 2 is mostly about John Varner and his wife, Mary Pettigrew, who married during the 1750's in Virginia and then into what is now South Carolina.

George Hendricks (ca. 1763-1799) was born in Botetourt County, Va. In 1778, he was captured by the Indians at Blue Licks, Ky., and taken to Chillicothe, Ohio. By 1786, he had married Hannah Smith, (daughter of Nicholas Smith) in Illinois. Descendants of their five children lived in Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, Utah and elsewhere.

The migration of Irish emigrants to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania brought a widow and her child, Hugh Hamilton. He was married about 1760 to Margaret Dickson. In 1770, they moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. He died leaving her with four children. Descendants lived also in South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado and elsewhere.
