Description
The land which became the Soulard District of St. Louis was originally part of Spanish crown grants. It was subdivided by Julia Cerre, the widow of Antoine Soulard, surveyor for the King of Spain. Immigrants began settling in the area in the late 1790s. The churches which were constructed in the neighborhood over the years reflect the ethnic diversity of the residents.
