James Vincent (1821-1899), a nonconformist minister, was born in England, and was sent by the Wilberforce Society of England to the United States in 1848--to enter the crusade against Negro slavery. He married Mary Sheldon in 1853, helped with the Underground railroad, and served during the Civil War as a nurse in a hospital.
