The State Bureau of Vital Statistics was formed in 1918, almost 16 years after counties were keeping records on a local basis. Volumes 1-242A cover the years 1872-1918 but are arranged geographically so dates are not chronological except within a geographical region or registration district.
Indian death registrations were recorded in separate volumes with a separate numbering system from 1917 to 1956 but they are indexed with the main set of death registrations. In 1943, a special form was created for these death registrations but was discontinued after 1956.
