Description
Dirck Janse Van Der Vliet (1612-1698) married three times and was the father of seven children. He emigrated from the Netherlands in 1660 and came to New Netherlands as a soldier in 1660. His wife and children followed later. The family settled at Flatbush, Long Island. Descendants listed, especially ancestral families of the author, James Vliet, lived in New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere. Most descendants used the Vliet surname.

Dirk Van Vliet emigrated from Holland in the early 1700's and settled north of the Blue Mountains along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania in an area known then as the Minisink. He was born in 1699 in Amsterdam, Holland and died in 1774 in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He married Rachel Van Keuren (1720-1787) in 1741.

Ferdinandus VanSicklen, was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1635. He later emigrated and settled near Coney Island, New York. It is believed that he is the ancestor of all American VanSickles. He married Evan Jansen, the daughter of Anthony and Grietje Jansen. Most members of the family moved about 40 miles west into New Jersey near Somerville.
