John Watt Sr. (1798-1875) immigrated from Scotland to northern Ireland before 1823, and married Elizabeth Woodburn. The family immigrated in 1829/1830 to Charleston, South Carolina, and in 1838 settled on land in Warrick County, Indiana. Descendants and relatives lived in South Carolina, Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas and elsewhere.

James Coldwell was born 24 November 1836 in Guelph, Upper Canada. His parents were Robert Coldwell and Elizabeth Lauder White.
