Isaac Smutz was born 16 May 1810 in Maryland. His parents were David Smutz (1786-1852) and Mary Ann Thomas (1786-1847). His family moved to Pennsylvania in 1816. He married Sarah Stauffer, daughter of Christian Stauffer and Agnes Overholt, in 1832. They had twelve children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania, Missouri and Iowa.
