Joris Dircksen Brinckerhoff (ca.1604-1661) married Susanna Dubbels in 1628, and emigrated from Holland to Brooklyn, New York in 1640. Descendants (spelling the surname Brinkerhoff or Brinckerhoff) and relatives lived in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and elsewhere.

Ancestry is traced to Peter Westhofer of Hohensachsen who lived in 1490. One descendant, Johann Michael (1718-1768) was born at Lutzelsachsen, Germany. He immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1751. He married (1) Anna Maria Christina and (2) Susanna Margaretha Thiel in 1759. He later died in Maders Cove, Nova Scotia. Descendants lived in Nova Scotia, Massachusetts, Colorado, California, British Columbia, Washington, and elsewhere.

In 1777, Daniel Van Velzer and his wife, Betsey Beadle, United Empire Loyalists, settled in Digby, Nova Scotia, leaving Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Two of Daniel's sons, Jacob (married Sarah Raymond) and James (married Rosanna Hamilton) moved to Ontario. Another son, John, married Marian Cossiboom and lived in Illinois. Descendants lived in Ontario, Illinois, and elsewhere.
