The surname Whitaker appears to have originated with the English placename of Whitacre. Alexander Whitaker was the first Whitaker to immigrate to America, arriving in Jamestown, Virginia in 1611. One of the earliest whitakers in Kentucky was Isaac Whitaker of Perry County. He and his wife, Susannah were the parents of nine children. Descendants live in Kentucky and other parts of the United States.

John Whitaker and his wife, Catherine, were in Baltimore County, Maryland by 1699. Both died in 1713. Descendants lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and elsewhere.

William Ferrin Whitaker was born August 13, 1905 in Beaver, Utah. He was the 3rd child of Orson Adelbert and Clara Fotheringham Whitaker. He married Martha Bassett on August 19, 1926 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have 4 children: Orma, Susan, Connie, and William.
