In about 1600, members of the Vautrin family in Lorraine, with other Huguenots, were forced to flee to German Alsace. The name under German influence became Wotring. Peter Vautrin or Wotring (1640- 1713) was a miller at Hellering. He was an elder in the Reformed Church and was buried at Kirrberg. William Kelly (1755-1837), a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, probably the son of James Kelly, who emigrated from Ireland, ca. 1740. After the war, he settled in Path Valley, Pennsylvania, where he married Jane Moore, daughter of William Moore, in 1783. Johann Jacob Kaucher was born in about 1675 in Stein, Baden, Germany. He married Anna Weiss (1685-1746) 25 January 1707. Sons, Johann Jacob Kaucher (1707-1774) and Johann Michael Kaucher (1724-1784), emigrated and settled in Pennsylvania. Descendants also spell their name Casher, Caucher and Cougher.
