The immigrant, George Zimmerman, anglicized his name to Carpenter during the American Revolution. He emigrated from Switzerland or Germany and settled in Virginia. He had two sons by his first wife. He married Anna Schulteli and they had six children. He died in 1778.

He married Viola Velma Bowden, daughter of Charles Bowden and Alice Louise Powell, on 9 October 1918 in Brunswick, Antelope, Nebraska. They had five children. Johannes Zimmerman was born 1681 in Schlaitdorf, Wurtemberg, Germany. He was the son of Melchoir Zimmerman. Michael Diede and his family immigrated from Germany to Russia in 1819. Their son, Gottlieb Diede (b.1811/1812) married Anna Margret Metler, and they had 13 children who grew to adulthood. Eight of these children (7 girls and one boy) immigrated from Russia to South Dakota. Descendants lived in South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Oregon, California and elsewhere.
